The 8245 slot was previously open; it would've been former B&O SD40-2 7603, which was wrecked and retired before coming to CSX. --Units in the 8163-8197 block of missing engines were renumbered to the 2400 series --8800-8889 former CONRAIL Rebuilds --8302-8437 rebuilt from SD40s in 8300-8438 block. These 74 (75 minus 1 wrecked/retired) SD40s had the worst mechanical records and were rebuilt to SD40-2 specs. CSX traded the rest in, saving only a few straight SD40s, now in the 4600 series., which means 42 SD40's were sent packing --8439-8488 rebuilt by Boise Locomotive in 1990 from former UP/SP/CR/CNW SD40 and SD45s --8869-8885 rebuilt from SD40s by CR in 1993. --8886 and 8889 are SD40-2s but have SD45-2 carbodies --2443, 2445 downgraded to SD382S --8973 and 8974 downgraded from SD45-2 |
